     Hernando Cortes was one of the most famous Conquistadores of the New World.  In 1521 Cortes succeeded in conquering the Aztec empire and in claiming large areas of land in North and South America for Spain.  He wanted to set up a trading colony on the east coast of what is now called Mexico, and in order to establish this colony Cortes and his men had to subdue the Aztecs.
